Princess Ebele Orizu, wife of the Crown Prince of Nnewi Kingdom, has called on affluent Nigerians to extend compassion and support to widows and the oppressed as part of their responsibility to society. She made this appeal over the weekend during a widow empowerment event held in Abuja, organized to mark her birthday celebration.

Speaking at the event, Princess Orizu emphasized that her desire to uplift widows stems from a personal commitment to giving back to the community. She revealed that her initiative, known as the Desire for Widows Organisation, also branded as “Big Blue Heart,” was founded several years ago in her hometown of Nnewi but is now expanding its reach to widows across the country.

“I started out a few years ago by giving Christmas gifts to widows at women’s end-of-year meetings and quietly offering financial support to those who needed it,” she explained. “What moved me deeply was witnessing someone call out a few widows at a gathering and refer to them as ‘Jesus’ Wives.’ I was told these were women with no husbands—only Jesus. That moment stayed with me and inspired this mission.”

Princess Orizu described the goals of the organization, which include providing:

  • Vocational training
  • Support for small business startups
  • Access to healthcare services
  • Almsgiving
  • Emotional and spiritual counseling

“My vision is to become a primary platform of support for widows who feel forgotten or oppressed. Initially, I did this quietly. But now, I realize being vocal can help reach even more women in need,” she stated.

As part of the Abuja event, the newly inaugurated NGO distributed palliatives, financial aid, and offered prayers and counseling to the widows in attendance. The princess disclosed that she had personally spent “a few millions” on the initiative since its inception and expressed deep gratitude to God for enabling her to continue.

“No one person can solve all of society’s problems,” she noted, “but every little effort counts. I have joy in my Big Blue Heart.”

The event was attended by community leaders, religious figures, and supporters of the cause. It marked a major step in the organization’s expansion and a renewed call for collaborative philanthropy to support vulnerable women across Nigeria.
